Interactive Multimedia Atlas Information Systems

Note: This page is under construction and not complete.

Summary

Multimedia Atlas Information Systems (MAIS) can be characterized as systems for geographic visualization and analysis in a multimedia environment. Multimedia systems offer a good basis to achieve a dynamic cartography with interactive manipulation of spatial information. The potential for AIS lies in the integration of visualization techniques, multimedia and adapted GISfunctionality,
offering better information access and a versatile palette of presentation.

The project strives for the integration of different types of graphics and data in the visualization process. This allows for the creation of a variety of maps and other presentations from the same database. Useful interaction with spatial information on different levels can be achieved by a concept of ”modular maps”. In addition, the integration of adapted GIS techniques increases the
flexibility and the use of modern AIS.

Cartographic research in this project will have the following primary goals:
- Development of an overall ”GIS in Multimedia Cartography” concept
- Efficient visualization of two- and threedimensional graphics and data
- Explorative GIS-techniques for vector and raster data
- Realization of interactive map and atlas techniques in the DVD version ”Atlas of Switzerland”.

Project work encloses both transdisciplinary research and development aspects by integrating elaborated concepts, structures and specific functionality in a high-standard multimedia altas and thereby proofing their feasibility.
